SELF DISCOVERY AND COMMENTARY COLLIDE: Lally Katz's "Atlantis" at New Theatre

Playwright Lally Katz takes audiences on a thought-provoking and humorous journey in Atlantis, opening at New Theatre. The play combines autobiographical reflections with fantastical elements, exploring themes of self-discovery, social commentary, and environmental concerns.

Atlantis follows Katz's quest to navigate her personal situation against the backdrop of contemporary American society. The play delves into both comic and introspective moments, examining themes of innocence, excess, and societal deception.

Known for her unique blend of "theatrical magic realism," Katz infuses Atlantis with flights of imagination alongside real-life experiences. This approach offers a fresh perspective on self-discovery narratives, weaving in commentary on climate change and societal issues.

Katz herself was born in New Jersey, USA in 1978. When she was eight the family moved to Canberra.  She graduated from the University of Melbourne’s School of Studies in Creative Arts, studied playwriting at London’s Royal Court Theatre and in 2000 attended the Australian Theatre for Young People. When she was 23 she joined Stuck Pigs Squealing Theatre Company. This company produced several of her early plays with great success, leading to her being commissioned by mainstage theatre companies in Australia.

Atlantis was first produced in Sydney at Belvoir St in 2017 to great acclaim. New Theatre's production boasts a team of rising stars. Artistic director Tiffany Wong (Slanted Theatre) makes her debut, bringing a fresh vision to the stage. Talented young designers Amelia Lane, Topaz Marlay-Cole, and Sam Hernandez (all NIDA alumni) collaborate to create a visually captivating world.

The cast features a mix of established actors and New Theatre newcomers. Callum Alexander, Lisa Kelly, Dallas Reedman, and Luke Visentin share the stage with newcomers Georgia Britt, James Lau, Alyona Popova, and Renae Valastro.

Atlantis offers a unique theatrical experience that blends humour, introspection, and social commentary. With its talented team and thought-provoking themes, the play promises an engaging and memorable adventure for Sydney audiences.
