INK: Sydney Premiere

New Theatre in Sydney is gearing up for the highly anticipated Sydney premiere of James Graham's acclaimed play INK.

The play delves into the fascinating and ruthless world of tabloid journalism, specifically focusing on the rise of Rupert Murdoch and his transformation of The Sun newspaper in 1960s London. Graham, known for tackling political themes in his work, offers a "fast and furious, blisteringly funny exposé" according to The Guardian, showcasing the behind-the-scenes battles and audacious tactics employed by Murdoch and his team to turn The Sun into a media powerhouse.

INK promises a captivating journey through a pivotal moment in print media.  The drama is witness to the clash between The Sun, a fledgling tabloid with an "Aussie" desire to shake things up, and the established giant The Mirror.  Through the lens of this circulation war, Graham explores the changing landscape of journalism and the birth of a sensationalist approach that prioritised celebrity gossip and eye-catching headlines.

The playwright, known for his work on both stage and screen, brings his on-form talent to INK.  He boasts an impressive list of accolades, including an Olivier Award win for Best Comedy in 2018 and another Olivier Award for Best Play in 2024.  This Sydney production marks New Theatre's second foray into Graham's work, following their successful presentation of The Angry Brigade in 2019.

The production features a massive 17-member cast along with a creative team led by Director Louise Fischer with support from Assistant Director Spark Sanders Robinson.  Tom Bannerman's set design and Peter Ross's lighting design promise to transport the audience to the heart of Fleet Street.

Ultimately INK promises to be a thrilling and insightful production, offering a glimpse into the world of media manipulation and the power struggles that shaped a major newspaper.  With its sharp wit and historical setting, this Sydney premiere is sure to be a another compelling performance from from New Theatre.
