AUSTRALIA'S POETRY MONTH RETURNS

With new poems by Ambassadors Archie Roach, Bronte Campbell, Courtney Peppernell, Sisonke Msimang and more, August is the time to celebrate poetry and its place in our lives.

Poetry Month returns! Each August the annual celebration, produced by Red Room Poetry, aims to increase the profile of Australian poetry and poets. This overdue celebration of Australian poetic voices hopes to increase the value and visibility of poetry in all its forms and for all audiences, as well as celebrate the work of poets and poetry organisations across the country.

Returning from 1-31 August 2022, this annual celebration aspires for everyone to get involved in the joy and power of language in our daily lives. The vibrant 2022 program includes 30in30 - a specially commissioned poem released each day in August, the first ever National Poetry Gala in Sydney and curated events in every state and territory plus workshops, prizes and residencies.

The 2022 Poetry Month Ambassadors are:

  • Olympic medallist Bronte Campbell
  • Iconic Indigenous Australian singer-songwriter Archie Roach
  • Comedian and commentator Nat’s What I Reckon
  • International bestselling poet Courtney Peppernell
  • Acclaimed writer Sisonke Msimang
  • Broadcaster, journalist and sound artist Daniel Browning
  • AFI-winning actress Sacha Horler
  • Paralympic medallist Robyn Lambird
  • One of Australia’s leading Didgeridoo players and composers William Barton

Each Poetry Month Ambassador will write and perform a 30in30 poem and provide a reflection on what poetry means to them, alongside a daily social media writing prompt competition. Other specially commissioned 30in30 poets include Maria Tumarkin, Jazz Money, Eloise Grills, Dobby, Jamie Marina Lau, Elfie Shiosaki, Scott Patrick-Mitchell, Stephen Edgar, Mike Ladd and others.

The National Poetry Gala itself is scheduled for Friday 12 August in Sydney with an all star line-up to be announced. To kick things off, Melbourne’s Wheeler Centre will host a Victorian Gala on 4 August which will be followed by curated state and territory showcases in Adelaide, Hobart, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, Hobart and Alice Springs as well as an online AUS-NZ Showcase and poetry workshops.

Poetry Month is an initiative of Australia’s leading poetic organisation, Red Room Poetry. Until last year’s inaugural program, Australia had no national celebration to match overseas initiatives in the US, UK, New Zealand and Canada. Red Room’s vision for the annual program is to grow the audience, affection and acclaim for our own poetic voices.

Red Room Poetry is Australia's leading organisation for commissioning, creating, publishing and promoting poetry in meaningful ways. Red Room has a reputation for excellence and invention, delivering projects that are unparalleled in their quality, scale, professional payment of poets, cultural impact, amplification and engagement of poets, students and audiences of all ages.

Red Room’s Poetry Month is led by Artistic Director Dr Tamryn Bennett alongside Senior Project Managers Anne-Marie Te Whiu and David Stavanger
